October 2021 Blog

Hello Friends! The gardens are almost finished. We are expecting overnight temperatures in the 20s in a few days and that will freeze out whatever is persisting in the garden. The last things I need to gather in are beets and sorghum canes (to boil down into syrup).

Fall has come late this year- again. The farmers markets were brimming with great items and I did A LOT of canning. My storage shelves are full and it will be wonderful to enjoy so many delicious preserved fruits and vegetables over the cold winter months. I continue collecting data on what I have been growing in my backyard food garden, how much I harvest, how much water I use, etc. The current demands of my job are preventing me from analyzing the data from last season and this season, but I will get a break over the end-of-the-year holidays and next summer. I hope to get that data analyzed then. I also wish to update my book Just One Backyard: One Man’s Search for Food Sustainability and/or to write a second book that picks up where that book left off. I have much of the information I need to do the writing when the time is there to do so.

I hope you will take the time to enjoy the passing of the days and transition into the new season. It’s a beautiful time of year!
